Building Literacy

The Literacy & Numeracy Program is a supported initiative by The I Can Scholarship Foundation Inc., designed to improve reading literacy and numeracy skills among elementary and middle school students.

This program's goal is to provide personalized, evidence-based & research-based instruction to students who are reading below grade level or struggling with math concepts. Our goal is to help every student develop the confidence, skills, and love for learning that will support their long-term academic success.

The I Can Scholarship Foundation Inc. is committed to advancing early literacy outcomes through a structured, evidence-based approach. Our program will implement Reading Partners, a nationally recognized, evidence-based reading framework for grades K–5, to improve students’ reading fluency, comprehension, and overall literacy achievement. Through this model, students will receive high-dosage, individualized instruction aligned to their specific reading levels and learning needs. Instruction will focus on strengthening foundational literacy skills, including phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension.

Core Program Components:

• Individualized Literacy Support: Students will participate in consistent, small-group or one-on-one sessions tailored to address skill gaps and accelerate reading growth 
• Guided Reading Instruction: Structured, standards-aligned lessons designed to build comprehension, decoding, and critical thinking skills 
• Interactive Literacy Activities: Engaging, hands-on learning experiences that reinforce reading skills and promote active participation 
• Targeted Skill Development: Focused instruction in phonics, fluency, and comprehension using data-driven progress monitoring 
• Culturally Responsive Texts: Exposure to diverse literature that reflects students’ identities and experiences, fostering engagement and a love of reading 

Expected Outcomes & Impact:

• At least 75% of participating students will demonstrate measurable gains in reading fluency and comprehension, as assessed by pre- and post-program literacy benchmarks 
• Students will increase reading proficiency by one or more grade levels or meet individualized growth targets within the program period 
• Improved student confidence and engagement in reading, as measured through attendance, participation, and student feedback 
• Strengthened foundational literacy skills that contribute to long-term academic success 

By integrating evidence-based instruction with culturally relevant materials and consistent progress monitoring, this initiative will equip students with the skills necessary to become proficient, confident, and lifelong readers.
